Scarey - European Union

If this doesn't scare the crap out of you, I don't know what would.

George W Bush: Last President Of The United States Of America ?

It is all so brutally clear.
The puzzle pieces falling into place...

Push for Blair as new EU president

Tony Blair, the British prime minister, could end up swapping Downing Street for a job as the first full-time European Union president, under a plan being actively touted by Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president.
Mr Sarkozy is understood to have discussed the idea with other EU leaders ahead of next week’s European summit, Mr Blair’s last major international event as prime minister.

U.S.-European Union Relations and the 2007 Summit

Do I know that any of the above is true? Nope. It is, however, something to be scared shitless about if it is!

I would not worry too much about Tony Blair ever becoming a "President" of the European Union.

First, there are NO plans (and there will be hardly any support for one, if it would arise) for a European Union President. Hardly anybody in Europe thinks that a European Federation of Nations would be a good idea. The EU is a Trade Union by origin and this is as far as most Europeans want it to go. The EU is hardly a democratic body, afterall, and all member nations will surely want to remain independent nations.
And then this Sarcozy guy in France -- nobody outside of France takes him very serious. He is a right wing clown, so far doing nothing but upsetting people with his right wing semi-racist remarks.

I am wondering if Blair/Sarcozy are what is scaring you? Or is it the thought of a stronger European Union?

That in itself really shouldn't scare you. Had the EU been a bit better organized, it would have made a better opposition against the war in Irak, for example. It's not the UK Government i.c. Blair(who was perceived over here as George Bushes' puppy) that represents Europe. Nor France alone, for that matter. Many nations and almost all population of Europe were against this.

I think it's a pretty good idea. Blair is fully competent to help Europe in domestic policies. If the EU can also play more of a role with America, then that too will be beneficial to both American policies and the world.

So you and Jos think this is a good idea? I will research this a bit more and tell you all the reasons why I disagree (if the puter stays up and running)

No, I do NOT think it's a good idea!!!

I am NOT in favor of Tony Blair becoming "President" of the European Union!!

I am trying to explain in my above comment that there will not be any such thing as a European Union President!! Not in the foreseeable future.

And if it might EVER come to a European Presient (which I think it will not!) happen, even then it would NEVER be Tony Blair, as almost all of Europe: firstly don't like the fact that he/the UK blindly followed Bush in the Iraq War; and 2. the UK is not perceived to be a "pro-european union" country, even though they are a member. they are "euro-skeptic".

So I was wondering what it is exactly, that you find "scarey" -- is it Tony Blair, is it the EU, what is scary to you?

Hi Jos,
The President of the European Commission is the head of the executive body of the European Union. Currently the President is José Manuel Barroso who has been appointed since 2004.
Apparently they serve a five-year term.
Here's a link for you:

The idea of a Commission with this much power scares me and Tony Blair being president of it also scares me.
Watch the video I posted yesterday.

Hi Carol, we are on the same page. :)

And Tony Blair scares me anyhow ;)

But please note that the "president" of the European Commission is in no way a real "president" of the European Union.

This is and as far as I and I believe most Europeans are concerned it should remain that way) only literally a 'presiding' function, i.e. 'chairman' of the commission, not the E.U.! With NO power other than being a chairman.

If they would actually try and create a 'real' President function out of this, I am sure that will meet serious - serious! - opposition against that.

Hi Jos,
Glad we are on the same page. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens with this. I think all is not as it seems with this Group.
