Turning the Tables on the USA

Apparently the tables are being turned on us by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez who says that if Exxon Mobil Corp. wins court judgments to seize billions of dollars in Venezuelan assets then he will declare "economic war" on the US by refusing to sell Venezuelan oil to us.
Chavez even went so far as to say "If you end up freezing (Venezuelan assets) and it harms us, we're going to harm you," turning his words to U.S. President George W. Bush. "Do you know how? We aren't going to send oil to the United States. Take note, Mr. Bush, Mr. Danger."
This is a startling commentary actually about how weary other Countries have become of Bush's constant bullying and sanctions.

Isn't Venezuela/Chavez the primary owners of Citgo? What would happen to all of the Citgo gas stations if they couldn't be resupplied? This type of rhetoric is not good, and it is yet another reason why the U.S. needs to lessen it's dependence on foreign oil and invest in alternative energy sources.

Hi Jeremy,
Chavez is indeed the primary owner of Citgo = I suppose the Citgo's would close...don't know for sure. I think the more important point you made is we need to lessen our dependence on foreign oil and develop alternatives,
Thanks for the insightful comment and for taking the time to leave it.
Nice to meet you!

Let's spend money on alternative energy development, we will be saying this till we are blue in the face..We have to find a way to use less and as consumers demand alternatives. Since we are run by corporations anyway, let's tell them where are money will go.

I love to see other leaders stand up to the U.S. and Bush.

I really believe that if countries would talk rather than bully things would be much better.

I agree Ted, but it has occurred to me just now that perhaps other countries are becoming brave because Bush is on his way out or if they aren't trying to just send a message to whomever our next President is?
