Colonel: Iran aid to Iraqi militants unclear

The spokesman for Gen. David Petraeus said that a quote he e-mailed to The Washington Times for the article in today's paper about Iraq aiding militants was not clear and therefore misinterpreted.
Col. Steven Boylan said that "it is not clear if Iran's leaders stopped supplying weapons or training to extremist elements in Iraq. We hope that they have, but until we can confirm it, we are in the wait-and-see mode."

U.S. may stay in Iraq to '09, based on new plan

Strategy gives more time to establish security; at odds with Congress' push.

BAGHDAD - A revised U.S. military plan envisions establishing security at the local level in Baghdad and elsewhere by the summer of 2008, although it likely would take another year to get Iraqi forces ready to enforce any newfound stability, U.S. officials said Tuesday.
Known as the Joint Campaign Plan, developed in tandem by Gen. David Petraeus and his political counterpart in Baghdad, Ambassador Ryan Crocker, it reflects a timetable starkly at odds with the push by many in Congress to wind down U.S. involvement in a matter of months.
While the plan does not explicitly address troop levels or a withdrawal timetable, it anticipates a U.S. troop decline later this year or in early 2008.
