Has FEMA learned from Katrina?

Another natural disaster has struck the United States in the form of a tornado. Not just an everyday average tornado, but an EF-5 packing winds up to 205 mph.

The storm leveled Greensburg, a small town in Kansas with a population of about 1,500. Reports say that 90% of the town is destroyed.

As rescue efforts continue, it didn’t take long for politicians to start pointing fingers at the Federal Government. Citing a lack of National Guard Equipment because it has been sent to Iraq, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius said the search and recovery effort will be hampered.

I personally feel that there is a time and place for everything. Might I suggest that political finger pointing be put on the back burner until the search and recovery process has ended. If FEMA has leaned anything at all from the Karina fiasco, one would hope that it can mobilize manpower and equipment, whether federal or private, to the disaster area post haste.

After the black eye left on the Bush Administration’s handling by Hurricane Katrina, let’s hope they get it right this time.

Disgusting display of ineptitude by US Government over Katrina Disaster

Almost two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast area of the Southern United States, evidence surfaces as to how truly incompetent the Bush Administration was in dealing with the crisis.

As reported by Reuters, it states that only $40 million of the $854 million offered has been used so far, and most of the offered aid was never collected.

Key supplies and services such as mobile telephone systems, medicines and cruise ships to house victims were delayed or refused because the U.S. government could not handle them, the newspaper said.

It cited an exchange of documents in which State Department officials worried over whether to tell Italy that its shipments of medical supplies had been left to spoil and were destroyed.

The United States declined 54 of 77 recorded offers of aid from three of its closest allies -- Canada, Britain and Israel -- according to a State Department table, the newspaper said.

This is totally inexcusable! Not only is $814 million unaccounted for, but to decline offers of aid from your friends and neighbors proves just how arrogant the Bush administration is!
