The administration’s initial efforts also failed to reassure global stock markets, which plunged Monday on rising fears that trouble in the U.S. economy could translate into weaker economic activity worldwide.

White House Says Hill Can't Pursue Contempt Cases
Bush administration officials unveiled a bold new assertion of executive authority yesterday in the dispute over the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, saying that the Justice Department will never be allowed to pursue contempt charges initiated by Congress against White House officials once the president has invoked executive privilege.
The position presents serious legal and political obstacles for congressional Democrats, who have begun laying the groundwork for contempt proceedings against current and former White House officials in order to pry loose information about the dismissals.
To put it another way then, The White House can now tell Congess to 'bring it on,' and tell 'we the sheeple' to go fuck ourselves!

White House-Congress showdown escalates over attorney firing subpoenas
WASHINGTON - President Bush invoked executive privilege Monday to deny requests by Congress for testimony from two former aides about the firings of federal prosecutors.
The White House, however, did offer again to make former counsel Harriet Miers and one-time political director Sara Taylor available for private, off-the-record interviews.
In a letter to the heads of the House and Senate Judiciary panels, White House counsel Fred Fielding insisted that Bush was acting in good faith and refused lawmakers' demand that the president explain the basis for invoking the privilege.
I don't know about you but this just reeks of cover-up! This is his latest dance step in the waltz to cover his ass and protect himself and his sidekicks from a contempt of Congress citation. He is willing however, to allow former counsel Harriet Miers and one-time political director Sara Taylor available for private, off-the-record interviews.
Now you tell me when is someone who has nothing to hide only going to allow off the record interviews?
