Wolfowitz and Hypocrites

WASHINGTON, May 17 —

Paul D. Wolfowitz, ending a furor over favoritism that blew up into a global fight over American leadership, announced his resignation as president of the World Bank Thursday evening after the bank’s board accepted his claim that his mistakes at the bank were made in good faith.

The decision came four days after a special investigative committee of the bank concluded that he had violated his contract by breaking ethical and governing rules in arranging the generous pay and promotion package for Shaha Ali Riza, his companion, in 2005.

While I don't condone anyone practicing favoritism , is there any among us who has not favored someone we really care about over someone we may not care so much about?
The World Bank forcing the resignation of Wolfowitz is simply more hypocrisy in an organization that is founded on hypocrisy and lies.

Bush still backs Wolfowitz. What message does this send?

Aboard Air Force One today, President Bush stated that Paul Wolfowitz continues to have the full support of the Bush Administration.

As one country after another are questioning Wolfowitz’s ability to lead the World Bank after internal investigations found him guilty of breaking bank policies and rules over a hefty promotion for his companion, Shaha Riza, Bush continues to stand by his man.

This sends a bad message to the world, a very bad message. Wolfy, Gonzo, Rovey, among others have all been under intense scrutiny involving political wrong doing, but Bush has continued to give his full, unconditional support to these political “evil doers.”

The message is loud and clear. Not only does Bush tolerate political wrong doing in his administration, he seems to encourage it as well.

Wolfowitz’s world is crumbling

Well, it’s official, not like any of us expected a different outcome, as Paul Wolfowitz was found guilty by a panel of his peers that he was in the wrong when he arranged a healthy pay raise for his girlfriend at the World Bank.

Not only was Wolfowitz found guilty of breaching his obligations, but his top communications aide, Kevin Kellems resigned after the findings stating “the current environment surrounding the leadership” at the bank made it “very difficult to be effective in helping to advance the mission of the institution,” as his reason. In his written statement, he also said that he had “tremendous respect and admiration” for the bank’s staff, but made no mention of his boss, Mr. Wolfowitz.

So I’m not sure how much more cut and dried it has to be before Wolfowitz gets the hint that he is no longer welcome to head the World Bank. Any normal person would resign immediately and try to salvage any remnants of dignity left.

I also wonder what will come out of the Bush camp regarding the findings of Wolfowitz’s wrong doing. Will George still support Paul? Only time will tell, but I’m waiting with baited breath to hear what he has to say!
