Bush on Iraq, economy, FISA, wiretapping

Further proof that Bush lives somewhere other than the planet Earth.
On one issue particularly worrisome to American consumers, there are indications that paying $4 for a gallon of gasoline is not out of the question once the summer driving season arrives. Asked about that, Bush said "That's interesting. I hadn't heard that. ... I know it's high now."

Fed chief tells Congress economic situation is ‘distinctly less favorable’

The Feds are lowering the interest rate again as the economy is "distinctly less favorable.
Let's face it with the economy the way it is, the high cost of food and heating oil and such, is it any wonder that people are holding on tighter to their money?
In my view of it we need to stop importing from other countries and learn to rely on our own people to produce the goods that we currently import. I think we also need to develop alternative sources of energy to end our dependency on foreign oil sources.
What's you view of this?

Breaking News - Bush says serious signs the economy is weakening

You know the economy is in big trouble when Democrats and Republicans start talking cooperation instead of confrontation.
What about Bush's repeated claim - made most recently in his State of the Union address - that "America has added jobs for a record 52 straight months."
On Friday he said, "A serious matter is that for the first time in 52 months we didn't create jobs."
Quite an about face in a matter of days isn't it?

White House may agree to go above $150 billion in economic aid

“We are not forecasting a recession,” Perino said. “Clearly there is a slowdown.”
This is the understatement of the year.
Not forecasting a recession? We are in a recession.
The administration’s initial efforts also failed to reassure global stock markets, which plunged Monday on rising fears that trouble in the U.S. economy could translate into weaker economic activity worldwide.

House passes $516 billion spending bill

By ANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The House Monday approved a $516 billion measure funding 14 Cabinet agencies and funding for troops in Afghanistan, setting the stage for a year-end budget deal with the White House.
President Bush has signaled he'll ultimately sign the measure — assuming up to $40 billion more is provided by the Senate for the Iraq war — despite opposition from GOP conservatives.
In an unusual two-step, lawmakers first voted 253-154 to approve the omnibus spending bill; they then voted 206-201 to add $31 billion for troops in Afghanistan to the measure. The combined $516 billion spending package is set for Senate debate on Tuesday.
The year-end measure mostly sticks within Bush's budget, though it shifts billions of dollars into politically sensitive programs he sought to cut. Bush signaled he would sign the measure, awarding a 4 percent increase, on average, to domestic programs.
Bush's approval depends on Senate Republicans succeeding, later this week, in adding up to $40 billion for U.S. troops in Iraq.
